Apr. 17—HARTFORD — Firefighters rescued a man from his burning apartment early Monday, an official said.

The fire broke out in a fourth-story apartment in the 30-block of Charter Oak Place about 5 a.m., before dawn, according to District Chief Mario Oquendo Jr. Firefighters went to the fourth floor, where they found the man and took him out of the five-story, brick building.

Meanwhile, other firefighters quickly knocked down the blaze, getting it under control before it spread any farther, Oquendo said. The flames had spread to a second apartment, he said.

The resident did not report having injures, but he was taken to the hospital to be evaluated, Oquendo said. No other residents or firefighters were injured.

The Hartford Fire Department’s Special Services Division is working with the American Red Cross to find the two families a temporary place to stay, he said.
